While tracking leads, Clarence would bend his B string from behind the nut to evoke the pedal steel, a technique limited to just the open position. Clarence turned to Gene and said “I wish I had a third hand!” After the session, Gene’s gears were turning. Clarence offered up his Telecaster to be hollowed out and filled with a contraption made of pedal steel linkages. The first ever StringBender® was born, and in Clarence’s hands, country guitar was forever changed.

Nearly 60 years later, Hipshot now proudly produces the latest iteration of the StringBender® to Gene’s exacting specifications. Instead of discrete linkages, the integrated system features components precision-mounted to a plate. This sheds nearly half the weight of the original design, simplifies installation, and creates a smoother, more consistent bending operation.
